Balancing of a Benchrest Rifle
It is preferable to get as much weight in the butt as possible.
Keep front rest overhang to a minimum, this keeps as much weight as possible on the rear bag.
Heavy Varmints typically shoot with 4lb of weight on the rear bag, whereas a Light Varmint is likely to be closer to 2lb.
Scopes - The newer 45x Leopold Competition scopes are well suited to the Heavy Varmint but are possibly less suitable for the Light Varmint due to there additional weight. For the Light Varmint the older 36x Leopold scope weighing only 16oz may be preferable as there is the opportunity to put additional weight into the rear of the stock (typically 5 to 8oz).
A typical Light Varmint set-up with a the 36x scope could be 5lb 8oz barrel + 4oz in the butt. If the newer 45x Leopold Competition scope was fitted then the 4oz butt weight would need to be removed. This could make the fitting of this heavier 45x scope counter productive.

Leupold Scope Dating
What year was my scope manufactured? Since 1974 Leupold has incorporated a letter date code in the serial number of each scope. The prefix, beginning with the letter E, was advanced each year. In 1993 the letter changed to a suffix, and was moved to the end of the serial number. Any scope without a letter in the serial number was produced before 1974. The following is a list of the date codes for each year of production.
Prefix: E - 1974, G - 1976, H - 1977, J - 1978, L - 1980, M - 1981, N - 1982, R - 1984, S - 1985, T - 1986, X - 1990, F - 1975, K - 1979, P - 1983, R - 1984, S - 1985, T - 1986, U - 1987, V - 1988, W - 1989, X - 1990, Y - 1991, Z - 1992

Locking a Leupold Scope
Bob Brackney mechanically locks up the scope and takes out the turrets, he doesn't glue them. If you ever want to go back to the original system he can put it back. He is also producing some high and low adjustable rings.
